How to forward only your important emails to your text

Are you looking to take email off your phone, but think that it’ll be impossible?

how to forward important email to your text

Today I’m going to share with you a helpful hack that I discovered that allows me to live peacefully without being glued to my Gmail account.

Let’s face it. The reason why you can’t live without email is not because you might not see J.Crew’s email the first minute it comes in.

So why do we keep refreshing?

Because there is something specific that we are waiting for. Maybe you want to see that email notification that your client’s payment came through. Maybe you’re waiting for an important email from your boss.

I believe that you’re only a couple of emails away from taking the leap and deleting Gmail from your phone.

So here is my hack:

Decide on the most important emails that you can’t live without and get only those emails forwarded to your phone via text messaging!

This way you are guaranteed not to miss out on what’s actually most important to you, but AND still be free from living in your inbox 24/7.

It's simple. It's free. And it's so worth the few minutes it takes to set up.

14 simple steps to set a Gmail filter to forward important emails to your text:

  1.  Send a text from your phone to your email address.

  2. Check your email and see what email address it came from. (If you have Verizon service, it might be 1234567890@vtext.com)

  3. Click on the gear icon on the top right of your screen, for settings.

  4. Click “See All Settings”

  5. Click “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”

  6. Click on the button “Add a forwarding address”

  7. Enter your texting email address that you found in step 2, click Next, and then click Proceed.

  8. You will then get a text with a confirmation code, type it in, and click Verify.

  9. On the bottom of the forwarding section, it says – “Tip: You can also forward only some of your mail by creating a filter!” Click on the blue words, “creating a filter”

  10. Where it says From, type in the email address of the person or company whose emails you absolutely can’t miss.

  11. Click then “Create Filter”

  12. Check the box, “Forward it to:” and choose your cell phone number

  13. Click the button “Create Filter”

  14. Now you’re all set up! Test and enjoy :)

I’ve been using this hack for months now and it’s been so helpful for my work-life balance.

Try it out and let me know how much you love it!

If you ever want to undo this Gmail forwarding filter, have no fear…. instructions are here:

  1. To completely get rid of your cell phone number from your gmail account, simply go back to the forwarding settings, click on your phone number, and choose the option to remove that forwarding address.

  2. If you want to just stop one specific filter, go to settings, and click on Filters and Blocked Addresses. Here you will see a list of all the filters that you previously set up and will have the option of deleting whichever ones you choose.
