Do I need to do something I hate for the sake of my business?

Why in the world would you want to do something you hate?

Do I need to do something I hate for the sake of my business?

Probably because you think that you should. You were told that running a successful business takes sacrifice, and you just gotta do what you gotta do.

But that attitude won’t take you anywhere on my side of town.

Here is what I know to be true:
Running a business does take focus, but it shouldn’t cause you to suffer!

If you are resisting something, know that it’s for a reason. I highly doubt that it’s motivation that you’re lacking. You’ve come so far already and you know how to do hard things.

I have found that when I’m inspired to do something I don’t need to be motivated. When something feels right, action naturally follows and I’m able to do things that I would normally avoid.

So what can you do with a great idea that you would hate to implement?

You don’t have to sit overwhelmed and frozen on the couch waiting for inspiration to hit.

Here are three alternate approaches:

  1. Collaboration is oftentimes the best way to balance out our weaknesses. Why should your clients get your second best, if this skill is someone else’s passion?!

You can hire. You can barter. You can partner.

It’s a triple win. For you, your collaborator, and your client!

  2. Do it differently. Think about the essence of the idea and see how you can do it differently. Maybe it doesn’t need to be exactly the way you originally envisioned it.

Use your creativity to brainstorm new ideas that fulfill the same big goals in a way that works for you. Getting perspective from someone outside your industry can be especially helpful here.

  3. Maybe nothing external needs to change and all you need is a minor mindset shift.

Ask yourself “What’s holding me back?”

Is there something that you’re afraid of? It may be an old story that you’re ready to let go of.

These are just a few perspectives that we try on for size during a typical business coaching session.

No matter what route you choose, I want to leave you with one message that if you internalize will fundamentally change the way you do business:

You are unique. You have a unique set of gifts to share with the world.

Focus on what makes you shine and you will light up the world!
